The call was made by some respondents including activists, lawyers, journalists among others on Monday while speaking on this year's international democracy day.
The international democracy day is observed 15th September yearly.
The United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe this particular day as the International Day of Democracy in the year 2007.
The purpose of promoting such a subject was to introduce the principle of democracy to the world, inviting nations to contribute to this concept by bringing democracy to their country.
Some respondents in Benin, highlighting the importance of the concept of democracy, described it as the best form of government.
They said a country like Nigeria which returned to civilian rule in 1999 has no doubt flog lifted economically and otherwise.
But the respondents said much still have to be done by all stakeholders including followers.
They also drew government attention to the areas of imprisonment of human rights activists, imposing on them severe torture, unemployment, tourism, as well as standards of living.
Meanwhile, there was no events such as seminars and road walks to mark the day in Edo State.
The theme of this year is engaging young people to exercise their rights.
