Re: Onitsha Bridgehead Demolition

Re: Onitsha Bridgehead Demolition
Writing on the recent series of demolition of illegal shanties at the bridgehead, Onitsha, Emmanuel Obe of the PUNCH Newspaper (Saturday Punch of January 19, 2013, page 14), among other things, stated thus: “tales of woe and despondency hung in the air as bulldozers deployed by the Anambra State Government roared through all the markets on the River Niger bridgehead end of the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway some days ago”.

Yes, there were series of demolition at the bridgehead axis of Onitsha , the commercial nerve centre of Anambra State . That axis is the major entrance to Anambra State . Whatever one sees at this strategic point, as one enters Anambra State , says a lot about the government and people of this State. A visitor or returnee coming from Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo and Delta States or from Abuja or even outside Nigerian shores, forms his or her opinion about the hygiene, sense of aesthetics, and decorum or lack thereof of the people and government of Anambra State based on what he/she sees at the bridgehead.

Before now, that is before the demolition, this bridgehead area on both sides, was home to filth – animal dung, birds’ feathers, muddy and oily soil- where decayed tomatoes, onions and other condiments were recklessly displayed to the discomfiture of the residents of and visitors to Onitsha and those on transit to Enugu, Imo, Abia, Cross –River, Rivers, Kogi and the Northern States of our dear country, Nigeria.

It is only imperative that such dirty, such unhygienic and such unsightly scenario could not continue to be tolerated by any responsive and responsible government, least of all, one under the watch of a caring, health-conscious Peter Obi, the Governor of Anambra State – a governor who believes that leadership is doing the right things for the people independently of insinuations or appeals to sentiments, recourse to propaganda, innuendoes and the like. He would tell you with relish that governance, unlike the Entertainment and Sports Industries, has nothing to do with popularity. For him, the reason Margaret Thatcher was not popular when she was British Prime Minister was that she took tough decisions to salvage the British economy at a time when her counterparts in her Continent were not courageous to emulate her. But for her tough stature, British Airways and other corporations would not have survived till today. Is it not interesting to note that several years after she held sway as Prime Minister , Thatcher who was once derogatorily referred to as Iron Lady ,is today celebrated in Britain as the woman who saw tomorrow ?

Even the venerable Elder Statesman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo could not agree more with Mr. Peter Obi on leadership and what it entails. In a recent occasion organized in Abeokuta to celebrate him as an international icon, the former Head of State among other things, held that “it is inevitable for a leader who wants to succeed in Nigeria (and I dare add, anywhere on the surface of the Earth) to step on toes”, adding that “those who lack the courage to step on toes for the right reason, should not aspire to any leadership position”(THE NATION Newspaper, Saturday, January 19, 2013, page 57).

What is going on in Onitsha and in some other cities and towns in Anambra State under Governor Obi’s watch, are the right things: they are logically defensible; they emanate from a clear conscience and what is more, they serve the interest of the majority of the people.

It is on record that for more than five years, Governor Peter Obi’s administration has been appealing to traders at the bridgehead, Onitsha to vacate the area so that it could be worked upon – cleared of refuse and rubbish, asphalted and beautified so that traffic from the Asaba end (in neighbouring Delta State) could flow freely and people entering Anambra State could feel that civilized human beings who eke out decent existence reside there.

The Governor had visited the traders, countless times; appealed to them on several occasions to see reasons to relocate to an area in Ogbunike – Umunya axis on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway so that work could commence at the bridgehead. Sensing that some of the traders may be reading tribal meanings into his appeals, the governor had on different occasions taken the heads of different Security agencies in the State - Army Commander at the 301 Artillery Regiment Onitsha, Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Director of the State Security Service, etc to the new site for them to help in assessing its suitability as an alternative to the rather chaotic, congested and dirty scenario at Onitsha. All the Security heads agreed with the governor that with the proximity of the express road, the Police Post already built, etc, there was no reason why the traders and their clients would insist on staying at the bridgehead.

It is important to point out here that some of the traders literally ridiculed His Excellency on some occasions when he spoke to them at the bridgehead. They would engage him in unending argument without even showing due respect to his office. On one occasion, one of them boasted that the Hausa community at Onitsha had petitioned the Sultan of Sokoto and that they were actually waiting for his directive on whether they should vacate the premises or not.

And as if that was actually true, the Sultan, His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar came to Anambra State . Amazingly, during his courtesy call on His Excellency, at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House, Awka ,the Sultan shocked all those who had wrongly thought that Governor Peter Obi was a tribalist.

Recalling his Military Service days at Nsukka town as an Army Captain (or was it Major) and knowing Mr. Peter Obi as a student at the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in the 1980s, the Sultan announced to the chagrin of some of the people present that he had known citizen Peter Obi for more than 29 years, adding that he (the Governor) could not “hurt a fly”.

As if that statement was not enough, Governor Obi later took his guest, the Sultan to the Palace of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe where he was treated to the usual royal ceremonies before the governor accompanied the Sultan to a ceremony in a mosque near Onitsha Main Market. It is important to note that the relationship between Governor Peter Obi and the Muslim/Hausa/Yoruba community in Anambra State has been very cordial. This is because the governor welcomes everyone in open arms regardless of his/her state of origin, religion, ethnic or tribal inclination. During the last Sallah, for instance, the Governor personally worshipped and broke the fast at an Awka mosque to the admiration of everyone. It is therefore surprising to notice that tribal meanings are being read into an action that is basically dictated by the urge to create a decent and civilized environment which will benefit even those shouting condemnation.

For the avoidance of doubt, the bridgehead axis of Onitsha is peopled by a variety of persons – Anambra traders, people from Enugu , Ebonyi, Imo, Abia States and a few Hausas and Yorubas. So the argument that the relocation order was handed down to Hausas and Yorubas to the exclusion of Igbo people, does not hold water.

Elsewhere at Nkpor, Ogidi, Ekwulobia, Awka, Nnewi and even Otu-Ocha, the headquarters of Anambra East Council Area, to mention just some places, demolition of illegal structures was carried out for the same reason that they were done at the Bridgehead area of Onitsha . In fact, the demolition exercises were in accordance with the decision of Anambra State Executive Council, a decision basically taken with a view to creating order, decency and civility in the State.

Needless to add that actions of this nature are also carried out in other States of the Federation for similar reasons. Let no one therefore single out the case of Anambra and ascribe an ulterior motive to it. It will be quite unfair to play politics with everything much in the same way in which it will be both naïve and wicked to give a dog a bad name just to hang it.

Mike Udah, Chief Press Secretary to Governor of Anambra State reports from Awka

UK's Prince Harry returns from Afghanistan

UK's Prince Harry returns from Afghanistan

The Ministry of Defense revealed Monday that the 28-year-old prince is returning from a five-month deployment in Afghanistan, where he served as an Apache helicopter pilot with the Army Air Corps. It did not immediately divulge his exact whereabouts.

In interviews conducted in Afghanistan, the third in line to the British throne described feeling boredom, frustration and satisfaction during a tour that saw him fire at Taliban fighters on missions in support of ground troops.

When asked whether he had killed from the cockpit, he said: "Yea, so lots of people have."

He also spoke of his struggle to balance his job as an army officer with his royal role — and his relief at the chance to be "one of the guys."

"My father's always trying to remind me about who I am and stuff like that," said Harry, the younger son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. "But it's very easy to forget about who I am when I am in the army. Everyone's wearing the same uniform and doing the same kind of thing."

Stationed at Camp Bastion, a sprawling British base in the southern Afghan desert, the prince — known as Capt. Wales in the military — flew scores of missions as a co-pilot gunner, sometimes firing rockets and missiles at Taliban fighters.

"Take a life to save a life. That's what we revolve around, I suppose," he said. "If there's people trying to do bad stuff to our guys, then we'll take them out of the game."

Harry's second tour in Afghanistan went more smoothly than the first, in 2007-2008, which was cut short after 10 weeks when a magazine and websites disclosed details of his whereabouts. British media had agreed to a news blackout on security grounds.

This time, the media were allowed limited access to the prince in return for not reporting operational details.

A member of the air corps' 662 Squadron, the prince was part of a two-man crew whose duties ranged from supporting ground troops in firefights with the Taliban to accompanying British Chinook and U.S. Black Hawk helicopters as they evacuated wounded soldiers.

He said that while sometimes it was necessary to fire on insurgents, the formidable helicopter — equipped with wing-mounted rockets, Hellfire laser-guided missiles and a 30mm machine gun — was usually an effective deterrent.

Harry shared a room with another pilot in a basic accommodation block made from shipping containers, and passed the time between callouts playing video games and watching movies with his fellow officers. His security detail accompanied him on base, but not when flying.

"It's as normal as it's going to get," Harry said of the arrangement. "I'm one of the guys. I don't get treated any differently."

But he said he still received unwanted attention at Camp Bastion, which is home to thousands of troops.

"For me it's not that normal because I go into the cookhouse and everyone has a good old gawp, and that's one thing that I dislike about being here," he said. "Because there's plenty of guys in there that have never met me, therefore look at me as Prince Harry and not as Capt. Wales, which is frustrating."

Ever since Harry graduated from the Sandhurst military academy in 2006, his desire for a military career has collided with his royal role. After his curtailed first Afghan deployment, he retrained as a helicopter pilot in order to have the chance of being sent back.

simply there for the ride, The question is how long are you going to last in the game if
you are only interested in just playing the latest jams and not undergo the basic rudiments of the craft, I won't say that i am the best but my dream is to be one of the Best and right now i believe i am amongst the best Dj's in the world...that's what makes me 'De Smash Master'.

Justin Bieber dethrones Lady Gaga on Twitte

Justin Bieber dethrones Lady Gaga on Twitter

In a perfect world, our most popular Twitterer might be a brilliant scientist, writer, philosopher or spiritual leader.

In this world, he is an 18-year-old pop star with famous hair.

On Monday night, Justin Bieber surpassed fellow singer Lady Gaga to become the most-followed person on Twitter. As of Tuesday morning, The Biebs had more than 33,333,000 followers, while Gaga was closing in on 33,329,000. Both numbers continued to creep up, but it appeared Bieber was gradually increasing his lead.

Neither had immediately acknowledged the milestone on Twitter. Gaga's latest tweet was a message to fans about her concert Monday night in Hollywood, California, while Bieber's was a plug for a recent Teen Vogue photo shoot.

Based on their respective rates of growth, Bieber and his hordes of Beliebers were projected to overtake Gaga on Sunday afternoon, according to Twitter Counter, but Gaga's Little Monsters put up a fight.

The coiffed Canadian crooner is Twitter's first new king or queen since Gaga dethroned Britney Spears in August 2010. But Gaga still has more fans on Facebook -- almost 55 million, compared to Bieber's 50,666,000. (Rihanna tops both with 65 million.)
Twitter's top 10 users (seven of them are singers):

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEPATITIS

Hepatitis is a medical condition defined by the inflammation of the liver and characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ. The name is from the Greek hepar (ἧπαρ), the root being hepat- (ἡπατ-), meaning liver, and suffix -itis, meaning "inflammation" The condition can be self-limiting (healing on its own) or can progress to fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis.
Hepatitis may occur with limited or no symptoms, but often leads to jaundice, anorexia (poor appetite) and malaise. Hepatitis is acute when it lasts less than six months and chronic when it persists longer. A group of viruses known as the hepatitis viruses cause most cases of hepatitis worldwide, but hepatitis can also be caused by toxins (notably alcohol, certain medications, some industrial organic solvents and plants), other infections and autoimmune diseases.

Hepatitis can heal on its own with no significant consequence, or it can progress to scarring of the liver. Acute hepatitis lasts under six months, while chronic hepatitis lasts longer.
Most liver damage is caused by 3 hepatitis viruses, called hepatitis A, B and C. However, hepatitis can also be caused by alcohol and some other toxins and infections, as well as from our own autoimmune process (the body attacks itself).

About 250 million people globally are thought to be affected by hepatitis C, while 300 million people are thought to be carriers of hepatitis B.

Not all forms of hepatitis are infectious. Alcohol, medicines, and chemical may be bad for the liver and cause inflammation. A person may have a genetic problem, a metabolic disorder, or an immune related injury.
Obesity can be a cause of liver damage which can lead to inflammation. These are known as non-infectious, because they cannot spread form person-to-person.

How many types of hepatitis are there?

There are five main types of hepatitis that are caused by a virus, A, B, C, D, and E - plus types X and G.

·         Hepatitis A - this is caused by eating infected food or water. The food or water is infected with a virus called HAV (Hepatitis A Virus). Anal-oral contact during sex can also be a cause. Nearly everyone who develops Hepatitis A makes a full recovery - it does not lead to chronic disease.

·         Hepatitis B - this is an STD (sexually transmitted disease). It is caused by the virus HBV (Hepatitis B Virus) and is spread by contact with infected blood, semen, and some other body fluids. You get Hepatitis B by:
o    Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person (unprotected sex means without using a condom) Using a syringe that was previously used by an infected person (most commonly happens with drug addicts and people who inject steroids).

o    Having your skin perforated with unsterilized needles, as might be the case when getting a tattoo, or being accidentally pricked. People who work in health care risk becoming infected by accident in this way. Sharing personal items, such as a toothbrush or razor, with an infected person.

o    A baby can become infected through his mother's milk if she is infected.

o    Being bitten by someone who is infected.

The liver of a person infected with Hepatitis B swells. The patient can suffer serious liver damage due to infection, resulting in cancer. For some patients the hepatitis becomes chronic (very long-term or lifelong). Donated blood is always tested for Hepatitis B.

·         Hepatitis C - Hepatitis C is usually spread through direct contact with the blood of a person who has the disease. It is caused by the virus HCV (Hepatitis C Virus). The liver can swell and become damaged. In hepatitis C, unlike hepatitis B, liver cancer risk is only increased in people with cirrhosis and only 20% of hep C patients get cirrhosis. Feces is never a route of transmission in hepatitis C. Donated blood is also tested for Hepatitis C.

Misuse of anesthesia can result in the transmission of hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses, researchers reported in the journal Gastroenterology. The cause of infection tends to be from anesthesia contamination, and not endoscopy contamination. Experts say that more effort is needed to better educate the healthcare community about the importance of strict sterile techniques when using any type of anesthesia.

·         Hepatitis D - only a person who is already infected with Hepatitis B can become infected with Hepatitis D. It is caused by the virus HDV (Hepatitis D Virus). Infection is through contact with infected blood, unprotected sex, and perforation of the skin with infected needles. The liver of a person with Hepatitis D swells.

·         Hepatitis E - a person can become infected by drinking water that contains HEV (Hepatitis E Virus). The liver swells but there is no long-term consequence. Infection is also possible through anal-oral sex.

·         Hepatitis X - if a hepatitis cannot be attributed to the viruses of hepatitis A, B, C, D, or E, it is called Hepatitis X. In other words, hepatitis of an unknown virus.

·         Hepatitis G - this is a type of hepatitis caused by the Hepatitis G virus (HGV). Usually there are no symptoms. When there are symptoms they are very mild.

What are the signs and symptoms of hepatitis?

Many people with Hepatitis experience either mild symptoms or none at all. Remember that an infected person's feces are always infectious to other people. When symptoms appear, they usually do so about 15 to 180 days after the person has become infected.

The acute phase of hepatitis - symptoms

The initial phase of hepatitis is called the acute phase. The symptoms are like a mild
flu, and may include:

·         Diarrhea

·         Fatigue

·         Loss of appetite

·         Mild fever

·         Muscle or joint aches

·         Nausea

·         Slight abdominal pain

·         Vomiting

·         Weight loss

The acute phase is not usually dangerous, unless it develops into the fulminant or rapidly progressing form, which can lead to death.

As the patient gets worse, these symptoms may follow:

·         Circulation problems (only toxic/drug-induced hepatitis)

·         Dark urine

·         Dizziness (only toxic/drug-induced hepatitis)

·         Drowsiness (only toxic/drug-induced hepatitis)

·         Enlarged spleen (only alcoholic hepatitis)

·         Headache (only toxic/drug-induced hepatitis)

·         Hives

·         Itchy skin

·         Light colored feces, the feces may contain pus

·         Yellow skin, whites of eyes, tongue (jaundice)

Patient outcomes after the acute phase depend on various factors, especially the type of hepatitis.

Treatments for hepatitis

·         Hepatitis A - There is no treatment specifically for hepatitis A. Doctor will advise the patient to abstain from alcohol and drugs during the recovery. The vast majority of patients with Hepatitis A will recover spontaneously.

·         Hepatitis B - A patient with Hepatitis B needs to rest. He will require a diet that is high in protein and carbohydrate - this is to repair damaged liver cells, as well as to protect the liver. If this is not enough, the doctor may prescribe interferon. Interferon is an antiviral agent.

·         Hepatitis C - A patient with Hepatitis C will be prescribed pegylated interferon and ribavirin.

Patients with chronic hepatitis C who are receiving standard HCV treatment may benefit significantly by taking vitamin B12 supplements, researchers reported in the journal Gut. The authors explained that by adding vitamin B12 to standard treatment, the body's ability to fight the virus is greatly improved. According to their study results, patients who are difficult to treat effectively benefit especially well.

Interferon-free treatment for hepatitis C may eventually be possible, researchers reported in NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine). In a clinical trial, sofosbuvir was successful in treating Hepatitis C infection. Sofosbuvir is an oral nucleotide inhibitor of HCV polymerase.

·         Hepatitis D or E - So far, there is no effective treatment for either Hepatitis D or E.

·         Non-Viral Hepatitis - If the patient has non-viral hepatitis, the doctor needs to remove the harmful substance. It will be flushed out of the stomach by hyperventilation or induced vomiting. Patients with drug-induced hepatitis may be prescribed corticosteroids.

How to prevent hepatitis

How to prevent Hepatitis A

·         Wash your hands with soap after going to the toilet

·         Only consume food that has just been cooked

·         Only drink commercially bottled water, or boiled water if you unsure of local sanitation

·         Only eat fruits that you can peel if you are somewhere where sanitation is unreliable

·         Only eat raw vegetables if you are sure they have been cleaned/disinfected thoroughly

·         Get a vaccine for Hepatitis A if you travel to places where hepatitis may be endemic

How to prevent Hepatitis B

·         Tell the partner if you are a carrier or try to find out whether he/she is a carrier

·         Practice safe sex

·         Only use clean syringes that have not been used by anyone else

·         Do not share toothbrushes, razors, or manicure instruments

·         Have a Hepatitis B series of shots if you are at risk

·         Only allow well sterilized skin perforating equipment (tattoo, acupuncture, etc.)

How to prevent Hepatitis C

·         If you are infected do not let others share your toothbrush, razor, manicure equipment

·         If you are infected cover open wounds

·         Do not share needles, toothbrushes, or manicure equipment

·         If your skin is to be pierced, make sure equipment is well sterilized (tattoo, etc.)

·         Go easy on the alcohol

·         Do not share drug equipment

How to prevent Hepatitis D

·         Use the same guidelines as for Hepatitis B. Only a person who is infected with Hepatitis B can become infected with Hepatitis D.

How to prevent Hepatitis E

·         Do the same as you would to protect yourself from Hepatitis A infection.

How to prevent Alcoholic Hepatitis

·         Go easy on the alcohol, or abstain from consuming alcohol

How to prevent Toxic/Drug Induced Hepatitis
