Oscar Pistorius case: Top detective brought in

National police chief Mangwashi Phiyega made the announcement at a news conference on Thursday afternoon

Oscar Pistorius arrest

South Africa's top detective is to take over the Oscar Pistorius probe amid attempted murder accusations against current lead officer Hilton Botha.
Mr Botha was removed pending the result of a probe into seven counts of attempted murder.
National police chief Mangwashi Phiyega announced the change after a third day of testimony at Mr Pistorius's bail hearing.
Mr Pistorius, 26, denies murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, 29.
Ms Steenkamp died after being shot three times at Mr Pistorius' home on 14 February.
Commissioner Mangwashi Phiyega said the South African Police Service (SAPS) had received feedback from state prosecutors about Mr Botha only on Wednesday.
She described him as an "experienced detective" who was not yet facing any criminal charges.
However, she said she was using her authority as national police chief to ask Lt Gen Vinesh Moonoo, the country's leading detective, to take over the Pistorius case.
In court on Thursday, defence and prosecution lawyers offered their final arguments ahead of what is expected to be a ruling on Friday.
Lead defence lawyer Barry Roux asked for the charge of premeditated murder to be downgraded, and said revelations about Mr Botha undermined the prosecution's case.
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court Mr Pistorius should not be granted bail simply because he is famous.
He branded Mr Pistorius as a man "prone to violence" who threatened Ms Steenkamp and eventually killed her.

Explosion under the Festac Link Bridge kills one

There was an explosion this morning under the Festac Link Bridge that killed a middle aged businessman, Oladele Pius. He was unfortunately passing under the bridge at the exact moment the explosion occurred. His body parts flew in different directions and police had to use shovel to scoop pieces of his body parts scattered around the scene into a bag. Sad! Mr Pius was the head of the sand dredgers association in the area.

The police said it wasn't a bomb as earlier speculated, that what the bomb disposal unit found at the scene was battery put in a torchlight. They promised to investigate what really happened and find the people behind it. There are those who believe that Oladele Pius was targeted. The man you see above was injured by the explosion. See the man who died in the explosion after the cut *viewers discretion advised*

Stephen Keshi tells African radio station he has quit as Nigeria coach

Stephen Keshi has told a South African radio station that he has resigned as the Nigeria coach, less than 24 hours after leading his country to the Africa Cup of Nations title.
The Super Eagles edged out Burkina Faso 1-0 in Sunday's final to become the African champions for the third time but it appears prior tensions between Keshi and the Nigerian Football Federation have led to his exit.
Keshi appeared on Metro FM, part of public broadcaster SABC, on Monday and said he had told the NFF of his decision after the match. The Metro FM presenter Robert Marawa tweeted: "Stephen Keshi has just announced that he handed over his resignation letter after the game exclusively on 083Sport@6 With Marawa on MetroFM".
Keshi had revealed tensions between himself and the NFF before the semi-finals , saying he would "pack his bags and leave" if he felt unwanted.
According to reports, Nigerian officials had booked a flight home for the squad, due to depart immediately after their quarter-final against the tournament favourites Ivory Coast – seen by Keshi as a vote of no confidence. Nigeria won the match 2-1.
Keshi, only the second man to win the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and a coach, said after victory in the final that he wanted to see other African countries give local coaches a chance rather than continuing to import from abroad

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour Compares Sunday’s Super Bowl 35mins crisis to Nigeria

The Chief International Correspondent for CNN, Christian Amanpour yesterday made comparisons between Nigeria and the Super Bowl on her blog. Her opinions seemed to focus on the frequent power outage in the country for which Nigerians responded by sending her their individual reactions. Here is what was said on the blog:
“While American waited 35 minutes for the Super Bowl’s lights to come on, Nigerians just chuckled.
They know all too well the problem of power outages: Nigeria has been plagued by rolling blackouts that last hours, sometimes even days.
So as the television audience worldwide waited for the power to come back on, Nigerians took to social media with wit.
“Power outage at the Super Bowl on Sunday. Suddenly, Nigeria doesn’t look as dark anymore,” tweeted one Nigerian.
“If they had the Super Bowl in Nigeria, the power coming back on would be the real surprise,” another tweeted.
Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, recently told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that his country’s electrical woes have been improving.
“That is one area that Nigerians are quite pleased with the government, that commitment to improve power. It’s working,” President Jonathan told the president.
Many Nigerian viewers tweeted messages to Christiane Amanpour to express their continued frustrations about having to rely on back-up generators for power.
